Straightpipe Snippet, February 2020, Summit Point is ready. Are you?

Are you ready? All the pieces are now in place to have a fabulous season of performance driving, racing, rally runs, and gathering with friends. Washington DC Region has completed the agreement process with Summit Point Raceway (A subsidiary of Xator Corporation) to secure event operations through 2021.
Working together, the Agreements are similar to previous years of cooperative support and promotion. There are some changes in the behind the scene operations, but the racing and driving programs will not see most of that process.
There will be some changes in the long-term camping area management and those with long term camping arrangements in the “Worker Camping” area. Summit Point Operations may re-introduce an entry admission for the general public, however SCCA members and their guests will have no charge access to our events.
Welcome to the decade of the twenties. Let’s make them roar!

Straightpipe Snippet, February 2020 Nuts & Other Loose Things - Wayne Armbrust, Region Executive

We need to talk. There is a myriad of stories and news to cover. Let’s back up for a second or two and wish you a Happy New Decade as we roar into the 20s. With the start of this new year, we have an obligation to glance in the mirror to see what is behind us as we head into our first lap.
The quick glance back fills the mirror; sometimes it is hard to realize what we have been through, accomplished, and changed. There are also things bringing changes into the new year as part of the continuous process of improvement and development. All the while, we move ahead at full speed in to the new year, and new decade with our existing programs.
We can’t do it alone. SCCA is an amazing world being driven by members of a club with a common thread of passion. Through this uncommon collection of talent, passion, and experience is born the organization that opens opportunities to take our love of cars and abilities and apply them to their fullest extent.
Beginning in 2020, Dominion Raceway will be a regular venue for Washington DE Region’s Track Events Program, as we host a full-fledged HPDE program and a Time Trials series. With our involvement in Dominion Raceway, we will be looking for ways to help develop and improve the track and its facilities in partnership with the owners, much as we always have in the past with others.
Summit Point is undergoing some considerable changes with transition in management and a few new changes in the way of doing things. Xator tells us they are 100% committed to supporting motorsports events and operations. We are working with local management and through Xator Corp. in order to meet conditions to continue our long tenure as the Home Track for our MARRS and Road Racing Program long into the future.
Our Track Events Program for the Northern area of the WDC Region at Summit Point has a new Director. Lin Toland has stepped up to the bar and taken the hand off from Chuck Edmondson. Our TE and associated TT program is the only standalone SCCA Track Events Program in the nation. That alone is testimony to the commitment our folks have had in putting the WDC Region program on the national map.
WDCR Road Racing with its well-known and established MARRS Championship is still rockin’ along. It is rapidly becoming the center piece in the division as we work more closely with our neighboring regions to build MARRS into a true multi region championship series.
Bracket Racing is still making waves across the country. Inquiries into format and structure are still coming in as more and more regions look to any means to increase wheel to wheel participation. We are also exploring the opportunity for fine tuning the Bracket Racing Program and offering more space and track time to competitors.
Autocross Program is full bloom and going strong. Opportunities are being explored to expand available sites and resources. Enthusiasm is stronger than ever in participation and pursuit of the perfect run.
Rallycross is finding its own in participation and venue selection. Doing the Rally thing in the dirt is an experience every one of our members should give a try. It is simply amazing and thrilling to make the runs. Of course, it takes a couple of days’ worth of hot showers to get down to the bottom layers, but it is worth every sliding moment of fun.
Road Rally is rolling along with our annual schooling program and early season event.
More irons are in the fire, getting ready to spread the brand, stay tuned.
We are officially in the ‘20s, let’s make the Roar! They can hear us all the way to Topeka and beyond.

2019 Workers of the Year Celebrated at VIR Runoffs

ALTON, Va. (Oct. 11, 2019) -- From the Runoffs to the Hoosier Racing Tire Super Tour, U.S. Majors Tour to regional weekends, SCCA® road racing events are made possible thanks to the tremendous effort of SCCA workers.  And each year a handful of workers are recognized for their enormous contribution.  Those individuals are bestowed with Worker of the Year honors, presented by Mazda.

"When you combine both national and regional activities, more than 200 road racing events are conducted across the United States by the Sports Car Club of America each year,” said Michael Cobb, SCCA President & CEO. “That colossal mission just couldn’t be achieved without the thousands of highly skilled and incredibly helpful volunteers who are part of this Club. Worker of the Year awards identify a handful of these devoted volunteers. To the winners and absolutely everyone who helped pull off 2019 SCCA events, I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough for your passion and involvement.”

Award recipients have shown dedication throughout the season to their Specialty, events, Region, competitors, fellow workers and the SCCA; exhibited strong skills, good leadership, and a willingness to go above and beyond what is expected; and provide excellent customer service to everyone encountered.  SCCA members submitted Worker of the Year nominations, and winners were then selected by the SCCA National staff with input from Division leadership.

The Flagging and Communications Worker of the Year is North Carolina Region’s Heather Clark. During her service to the SCCA Clark has served on the Region board, been Flag Chief and Assistant Chief for the last three years, and her experience and attitude has earned her the respect of fellow workers and drivers as she took on the role of a teacher and leader.

Cal Club’s Tracy Roper is the Grid & Pits Worker of the Year. Roper, who attended her first Runoffs® only a couple of years ago, has left a deep impression on the Club by never missing a race with her local region, being one of the first to arrive and always looking for more responsibility and things to learn.

Elizabeth Thiel, of Finger Lakes Region, has taken “plays well with others” to new heights in earning the Worker of the Year award for Race Administration. Theil presents a positive, professional attitude with track management, workers, drivers and partners as she handles the routine and not-so-routine events which pop up on race weekends for regions, the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour and Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour.

A 29-year SCCA member, New England Region’s Terry Roberts is the Registration Worker of the Year, an honor earned by being a wonderful ambassador to the SCCA at and away from the track in her years of service. At the track, Roberts has worked all over the East Coast in both Northeast and Southeast Divisions, and she has been a staple at the Runoffs® for more than a decade. Off track, Roberts’ can-do attitude has been flexed by coordinating annual meetings and serving as the Divisional Administrator.

The 2019 Scrutineering Worker of the Year is the “contagiously warm” Bernie Novak of San Francisco Region. Novak has participated in SCCA events as a scrutineer since 2011 and is known for her planning and coordination while interacting with drivers and fellow workers with a smile. Outside of her specialty, Novak has also gotten her competition license and participated in the Tire Rack Time Trials National Tour powered by Hagerty in a continuing quest to spread her enthusiasm on and off track.

Larry Kurkowski holds many specialty licenses, but it’s his time in the start stand which has earned this Florida Region member the SCCA Starter of the Year. On the way to the honor, this 36-year SCCA member has worked events from Florida to Minnesota and served on the Runoffs start team since 2008 as Assistant Chief and then Chief Starter.

The humility, grace, thoughtfulness and patience of Washington D.C. Region member Steve Pence has earned him the title of Steward Worker of the Year. Pence, who now splits his stewarding time between SCCA and FIA, has spent time in the SCCA as a driver, instructor, flagger, steward and Majors and Hoosier Super Tour Race Director. In each of those positions, Pence has garnered respect through transparent and sincere communication.

Steel Cities Region member Jeff Hutzelman is the Timing & Scoring Worker of the Year. Hutzelman strives to serve the SCCA wherever and whenever needed, working frequently out of division and at the Runoffs® setting examples for others with his dedication. It is Hutzelman’s delivery of excellence which leads him and the rest of the Worker of the Year group as shining examples of the SCCA spirit.

The Sports Car Club of America®, Inc., founded in 1944, is a 67,500-member motorsports organization that incorporates all facets of autocross, rally and road racing at both Club and professional levels. With headquarters in Topeka, Kansas, the SCCA annually sanctions over 2,000 events through its 115 Regions and subsidiary divisions. Much of the SCCA’s activities are made possible with support from the following Official Partners: Hagerty, the Official Insurance Partner of SCCA; Hawk Performance, the Official Brake Products of SCCA; Sunoco, the Official Fuel of SCCA; and Tire Rack, the Official Tire Retailer of SCCA. Bracket Racing 2019 Season Results

Fellow Bracket Racers,

In 2019 bracket racing contributed 95 entries to the MARRS Season with 49 different racers participating in the championship. However there can be only one champion. The inaugural Spring Bracket Road Racing Champion is Dave Fitzgerald! Dave had 6 first place wins and 2 second place efforts. Scott Merker and Steve Wickersham tied for second place. Jeff Liller 4th place and Bill Windsor rounded out our top 5. To earn points in the championship your bracket had to have at least 2 cars in the race. The Iron man award for bracket racing in all 5 home race weekends goes to three racers, James "Foster" Foster, Jeff Liller and well, me. Championship results are shown below. Thank you for all of your support in making bracket racing succeed this year!

All best,
