WDCR SCCA Western Maryland Chapter : Polish Mountain Hill Climb
is on August 5-6, this year at Gilpin Road, Flintstone, MD.
The Hill Climb is on a closed section of Gilpin Road on Polish Mountain, just east of Flintstone, MD, via MD Route 144. 2023 marks the 16th running of one of the most popular stops on the historic Pennsylvania Hill Climb Association Series annual schedule. Two days of competition on a 1.4-mile section of the original National Road climb the western face of Polish Mountain, taking full advantage of switchbacks originally carved to aid Conestoga wagons on their trek from the Mid-Atlantic region into the Ohio Valley in the early 1800s. The road was freshly paved by the Maryland State Highway Department in 2019, and hill records are expected to be set.
The Polish Mountain event is well known for three points of difference from other hill climbs in the region. First, the paddock is a picturesque, manicured farmer’s field near the start that serves as a park-like weekend camping enclave for racers and crews. Second, the hill is a technical sprint with a separate return road, allowing very high run counts compared to other time trials. Third, organizers and their charitable hosts from the Flintstone Volunteer Fire Company are congenial, professional, and service-oriented.
Competition, classing, and technical inspection are governed by the current SCCA GCR Regulations and 2022 Supplemental Regulations of the Pennsylvania Hill Climb Association.
In short, Polish Mountain offers drivers and crews the best of both worlds, a rural old-school public road speed event that rewards both vintage race cars and modern equipment. Please visit the link below to learn more and register.
