Driver Improvement Tips and Tricks

How to Lower Your RallyCross Times

Elapsed Times and Event Points

At RallyCross (RX) events you are clocked from the beginning to end of each run for an elapsed time (ET). At the end of the day all your ET’s are added into a total ET for the event. The lowest total ET wins.

Time penalties are assessed for hitting cones (+2 secs), hitting finish cones (+10 secs) and leaving start early (+5 secs). Penalties often make the difference for order of finish and they are to be avoided.

Drivers are awarded points in their class for how they finished for each event (see chart). At the end of the season driver points are added and the driver with the most points wins their class.

Place Points
1st 10
2nd 8

The key is everything you do –

• Driving strategies
• Driver mistakes
• the experimental
• don’t care just want to have fun
• and the ever present don’t have a clue and don’t want to

– will factor into your ET. Keep in mind you drive the car but sometimes the opposite happens (the car drives you) to the best drivers.

Consistency is very important. Drivers who win the day are consistently fast throughout all timed runs. Drivers win the year by competing in all events and being consistently fast at all events.

Other ways to get faster are...
• Join us in our annual early spring RX Driving School. Instructors are experienced drivers who will share tips and techniques. Look for dates on our schedule.
• Talk with other drivers and find out what they do (and don’t do) to go faster. Trust us, there are no dumb questions.
• Ask to ride along with an experienced driver during an event.
• Ask an experienced driver to ride along with you.

Following are driving tips from our drivers. One disclaimer; we all have different style and different cars. Something that works for a front wheel drive car may not work as well in an all wheel drive car.

  • There are places where less turn and throttle steer or constant throttle equals fast, places like sweep turns and slaloms.
  • Going really fast into a tight turn only works if you can get the traction to go from fast to slow quickly, otherwise lots of bad things will happen that net to slow.
  • It's important to get faster throughout the day's runs. Start the day by indexing the course on the 1st and 2nd runs. See what line works the best, when to brake, how hard to steer, when to accelerate out of turns and how much traction you have at different parts of the course.
  • Sliding is fun but is generally slower.
